On Land and Clay (2022-23)
On Land and Clay (2022-23) is a trio of large scale ceramic vessels made from wild clay harvested from my family’s property in Western Pennsylvania. This is land that belonged to the Monongahela Culture (1000-1600AD) and subsequently the Iroquois Confederacy (Haudenosaunee). These pieces are a testament to the relationship between humans and the land we inhabit. Separated from the ground in which it once existed, the clay used to make these vessels is a manifestation of time and place through the ecological particularities of the clay body.
